We Employ Latest Scientific Research & Technology

The Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was founded in 1972 on the basis of two laboratories of the Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and the Problem research laboratory of bone marrow and blood low-temperature preservation. The Institute has extensive contacts with research centers in Ukraine, the United States, Great Britain, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Israel, Spain, France, Sweden, Armenia, etc., that allows for broad programs in reproductive cryobiology, cryopreservation of cells, tissues, organs, as well as to mutual trainings of the employees.

“Because so many young researchers have left,  one of the biggest challenges will be bridging the generational gap. The institute is now focusing on promoting educational programs to entice both new and former students into the fold, despite the low number of students currently in the city.”

Scientific Schools

Blood and bone marrow cryopreservation

The scientific school was founded in 1972.
The scientific school of cryobiology was coined by the Institute’s founder and its first director (1972–1983), corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Prof., MD Mykola S. PUSHKAR.

Cryobiochemistry

Scientific School of Cryobiochemistry founded by Apollon Maksymovych Bilous.

Apollon Maksymovych Bilous was born in 1929 in the Kamianets-Podilskyi town of the Khmelnytsky region. He graduated from the Kyiv Medical Institute in 1955. In 1959 he started to work as a researcher at the M.I. Sitenko Ukrainian scientific research institute of orthopedics and traumatology in Kharkiv.

Reproductive Systems

The cryobiological school in reproductive medicine was born in the 80s of the 20th century. The Laboratory of Human Reproduction was formed in 1983. The Department of Cryobiology of the Reproduction System was established in 1984.

Cryoimmunology

Under the leadership of Prof. Goltsev and his students are conducting research at the molecular genetic level to study the influence of cryopreservation factors on the state of stem cell cells from various sources.

Cryoendocrinology

The Department develops approaches to cryopreservation of multicellular objects, in particular, multicellular spheroids; study of the effectiveness of transplantation of native and cryopreserved cells of endocrine glands in animals with experimental models of endocrine pathologies; obtaining tissue-specific stem / progenitor cells of endocrine glands for further use in the practice of culturing and transplantation; obtaining cells derived from the nerve crest in the form of spheroids under conditions of 3D-culturing, their cryopreservation and study of the influence of secretions from cryopreserved cultures on the course of neuroendocrine disorders.

Experimental Cryomedicine

The department has accumulated the most comprehensive  experience in Ukraine as for the use of low temperatures in experimental and clinical medicine. The staff developed a new approach to the creation of devitalized xenogeneic tissue implants by cryoradiation for reconstructive surgery.  The therapeutic potential of cryopreserved extracts of tissues and organs in experimental models of osteoarthritis, cold wounds, ulcerogenesis, etc. are under investigation. The influence of therapeutic hypothermia and introduction of mesenchymal stromal cells on the  experimental myocardial infarction is studied.

Stem Cells

The scientific school was founded in 1999 when Prof. Oleksandr Petrenko headed the Department of Cryobiochemistry

Theoretical Cryobiology

The scientific school was founded in 1972-1985.
Today it is headed by Prof. Olga I.GORDIYENKO and numbers 4 doctors and 7 candidates of sciences.

Cell Cryophysiology

The Department was established on February 8, 1988. From 1988 to 2017 the Department was headed by Heorhiy O. BABIYCHUK – DSci in biology, Prof., Winner of the Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in the field of physiology and theoretical medicine named after O.O. Bogomolets (1993), awarded the Diploma and the Badge of Distinction of the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine “For personal services to the Ukrainian people.” From June 2017 to the date, the Department is headed by MD, Senior Researcher Vladislav H. BABIYCHUK.

Quality Assurance Center educational and scientific activities

The Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is currently the only institution in the world that comprehensively develops modern medical and biological cryotechniques.

What people say about us

5/5
“Very important and necessary action! To note: the Institute for Problem of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine in Kharkiv is one of the oldest institutions worldwide, which activities are devoted to cryobiology and cryomedicine. The institute takes care of (one of) the oldest fish cryobank in Europe. Due to the war, there were significant problems with access to liquid nitrogen. No liquid nitrogen means samples thaw up and get lost... Probably other refrigerator types are needed with external energy storage systems to ensure continuous energy support und thus 24/7 functioning of the refrigerators..”

"The contribution of the Ukrainian science to the development of human reproductive cryobiology”... "Cryopreservation of human cumulus cells by a 3-steps slow freezing method for oocyte in vitro maturation system.."
5/5
“a research link was forged in the field of cryobiology that allowed new ideas and R&D opportunities to flow between the Marine Research Center (CIM) of UVigo and the Institute of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. For the CIM, this collaboration “is a huge opportunity for internationalization, to open new options for our students and researchers to interact with specialists from the Unesco Chair of Cryobiology, to see how research is carried out in other non-marine biological models, etc. “we are a worldwide reference on cryobiology of marine organisms” and for the Ukrainian institute this fact “opens a door to research on marine topics in collaboration with nodes, using different model organisms”. In short, it is a very good opportunity for both institutions, which are internationally known for their work in cryobiology, to join forces.”
