History of the Department
The cryobiological school on reproductive medicine was founded in the 80s of the 20th century. The Laboratory of Human Reproduction was created in 1983, and the Department of Reproductive System Cryobiology was established in 1984.

The Department was headed by Valentyn I. Gryschenko, an outstanding Ukrainian scientist, obstetrician-gynecologist, cryobiologist, cryomedical worker, teacher, Doctor of Medicine, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 2013-2018, the Department was headed by Yevhen F. Kopeika, PhD (Biology), and from 2018 till now – by Prof. Maryna P. Petrushko, Doctor of Sciences (Biology).
Research activities
- Study of the impact of cryopreservation on morphogenetic characteristics of human gametes and preimplantation embryos. Development of efficient methods for their cryopreservation. Substantiation and elaboration of in vitro techniques for cultivation of human oocytes of different maturity stages and preimplantation embryos.
- Investigation of cryoresistance of spermatozoa, oocytes and embryos of agricultural and rare animal species, including various fish species. Creation of a collection of animal germplasm, including valuable and rare fish species.
Current Research
- Study of changes in animal and human reproductive function under the influence of cryopreserved cell products and physical and chemical factors
- Exploring the impact of cryopreservation factors during vitrification on morphological and functional characteristics of reproductive cells and embryos
- Investigation of geroprotective and gerotherapeutic effect of cryopreserved placental biological objects
- Impact of cryopreservation on placental cells and their effect on the reproductive system of females with ovarian failure
- Substantiation of a differentiated approach to cryopreservation of reproductive cells taking into account their initial state and species specificity
- Evaluation of the degree of DNA fragmentation of spermatogenic cells of different stages of differentiation as a mandatory component of their cryopreservation technology
- Study of features of interaction and biocompatibility of nanoparticles with cultured cell
- Biosafety and efficiency of interaction of inert metal nanoparticles with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells.
Within the Department, the Laboratory for Fish Sperm Cryopreservation has been established. Currently, the activity of the Laboratory and, accordingly, the name were changed to the Laboratory of Gamete and Embryo (2016).
