MD, Doctor of Biological Sciences
HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
In 1975, the Laboratory of Cryobiochemistry of Neuro‑Humoral Systems was established within the Department of Cryobiochemistry. Since 1984, it has operated as an independent department under the same name, led by Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, Prof. A. M. Utevsky.
>> Learn more about the history
In 1987, the Department was renamed the Department of Cryobiochemistry and Pharmacology of Neuro‑Humoral Systems and was headed by Prof. Volodymyr A. Chuyko, Doctor of Biomedical Sciences. Since 1996, the Department has been led by Prof. Tetyana P. Bondarenko, Doctor of Biological Sciences.
In 2016, the Department received its current name — the Department of Cryoendocrinology. Since 2020, it has been headed by Dr. Yevhen I. Legach, Doctor of Medical Sciences.
Over the years, more than 30 Candidate of Sciences (PhD) dissertations and 2 doctoral dissertations have been completed within the Department.
RESEARCH DIRECTIONS
The Department focuses on developing advanced approaches to the cryopreservation of multicellular systems, including multicellular spheroids; investigating the effective transplantation of native and cryopreserved endocrine gland cells in animal models of endocrine disorders; generating tissue‑specific stem and progenitor cells of endocrine glands for their subsequent use in cultivation and transplantation; and obtaining neural crest–derived cells in spheroid shape under 3D culture conditions, followed by their cryopreservation and the study of secretome‑mediated effects on neuroendocrine dysfunction.
CURRENT RESEARCH
- Properties of cryopreserved primary endocrine cell cultures from neonatal animals in vitro and in vivo following transplantation
- Morphofunctional characteristics, cryopreservation strategies, and therapeutic potential of 2D and 3D cell cultures derived from neural crest lineages
