HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
In 1972, the Department of Organ and Tissue Transplantation was established as part of the newly founded Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Medicine of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1979, it was reorganized into the Department of Cryomedicine, and since 1984 it has operated as the Department of Experimental Cryomedicine.

For 40 years (from 1978 to 2018), the Department was headed by Prof. Borys P. Sandomyrskiy. In 2016, the Department merged with the Cryomorphology Laboratory, led by Dr. Mykola V. Repin, Senior Researcher and Doctor of Biological Sciences. Over the years, the Department has supervised more than 30 Candidate of Sciences (PhD) and 3 doctoral dissertations. In 2018, a team of authors, including Borys P. Sandomyrskiy, received the State Prize in Science and Technology for the series of scientific works “Cryothermosurgical methods and equipment for the treatment of oncological diseases of the abdominal organs.”
From 2018 to 2025, the Department was headed by Mykola O. Chyzh, Candidate of Medical Sciences and Senior Researcher. Since 2026, the Department has been led by Volodymyr Yu. Prokopyuk, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Candidate of Medical Sciences, and Senior Researcher.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
The Department has accumulated extensive experience in the use of low temperatures in both experimental and clinical medicine. Its researchers have developed a new approach to producing devitalized xenogeneic tissue implants using cryoradiation for applications in reconstructive and restorative surgery. Ongoing studies examine the effects of therapeutic hypothermia and the administration of mesenchymal stromal cells on the progression of experimental myocardial infarction. The therapeutic potential of cryopreserved tissue and organ extracts is also being investigated in experimental models of osteoarthritis, cold‑induced injuries, ulcerogenesis, myocardial infarction, and other pathological conditions.
