HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The department was established in 1988. >> Learn more about the history
Since 1988 to 2017, the Department was headed by Georgiy O. BABIYCHUK, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Prof., Winner of the O.O. Bogomolets Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in physiology and theoretical medicine (1993), awarded the Honorary Diploma and Distinction of the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine “For personal services to the Ukrainian people”. From June 2017 to the present, the Department has been headed by, Senior Researcher Vladyslav BABIYCHUK.
MAIN RESEARCH DIRECTIONS
The main direction of the Department scientific activity deals with investigation of the features of the mammalian body response to cold effect under natural and progressive aging as well as those with concomitant pathologies.
The Department activity is focused at:
- studying the mechanisms of independent and combined effect of rhythmic extreme cooling (RECE) (–120 °C) and cryopreserved nucleated cord blood cells (cNCBC) on the structure and functions of the regulatory systems of the animal body of various age groups in the norm and those with pathologies (alimentary obesity, arterial hypertension, dyscirculatory encephalopathy, depression, alcoholism, desynchronosis, disruption of the wakefulness-sleep cycle);
- elucidating the features of the impact of cold of different intensity and modality on structure and functions the animal body functional systems to improve approaches to existing methods of correcting pathological conditions;
- studying the features of the organism’s adaptation to long-term exposure to low temperatures, changed light conditions and confined space (Akademik Vernadsky Station, Antarctica, agreement with State Institution National Antarctic Scientific Center of Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine), as well as the role of the sleep-wake cycle in adaptation to extreme environmental factors; studying the features of physiological adaptations to cold and the development of natural hypometabolic states (hibernation).

CURRENT RESEARCH
- Study of the effect of different types and modes of rhythmic cold exposure and cryopreserved human cord blood on the state of homeostatic regulatory systems of the organism of experimental animals.
- Formation of adaptive responses of the organism of experimental animals under the influence of artificial cooling and cryopreserved nucleated cord blood cells during aging and pathological conditions.
