Department of Cryobiophysics was established at the Institute in 1976 on the basis of the Physics and Technology Laboratory. The first head and initiator of organizing the  Department was Doctor of Biological Sciences, Prof., Winner of the State Prize in Science and Technology Viktor Moiseyev, who headed the department for 25 years. He actually founded the scientific direction of cryobiophysics, which originated in the 80s of the last century. At the origins of cryobiophysics at the IPCC there were standing : Head of the Department since 2000 Dr. (Biology), Prof. Oleg Nardid, Senior Researcher Dr. (Biology), Winner of the State Prize in Science and Technology Oleksiy Vorotilin, Chief Researcher Dr. (Biology), Prof. Vasyl Zynchenko, Senior Researcher Candidate of Biological Sciences Kateryna Rozanova.

The main scientific direction of the department is the study of molecular mechanisms of cryodamage and cryoprotection of biological systems of various levels of organization. To solve these problems, the department has developed and modified methodological approaches to low temperatures that allow conducting research at the molecular level. The effect of low temperature on the conformational stability and biological activity of biomacromolecules and on the functional integrity of cells of the fetoplacental complex tissues (serum and plasma of cord blood, follicular fluid, erythrocytes of cord blood) was studied. An express method for the primary assessment of the biological activity of biological objects was proposed.

The department’s employees have received more than 50   copyright certificates, patents for utility models and inventions in  Ukraine.

Head of the Department, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Prof. Oleg  A. Nardid
