HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Low-Temperature Bank of Biological Objects (LTBBO) was established in August 2002.
>> learn more about its history
In 2022, the LTBBO celebrated the 20th anniversary of its activities. It counts 50 years of experience in the field of research into the impact of low temperatures on biological objects of various origins and levels of differentiation, the development of cryogenic biotechnologies and long-term storage of biological material at low temperatures, the introduction of the latest developments using low temperatures for practical application in biology and medicine. The Low-Temperature Bank of the IPCC is a bank of broad specialization, where genetic material of viruses, microorganisms, animals, birds, fish, humans – the biological diversity of Ukraine – is stored at liquid nitrogen temperature (-196 ℃). Blood components, placentas, cell lines of various tissues, biological samples and explants of endocrine glands, tumor cells, strains of microorganisms, viruses, fungi, biosensors and others are laid for long-term storage. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Institute’s founding and the 20th anniversary of its awarding of “National Heritage of Ukraine” for its preservation and sustainable development under martial law, the staff of the Low-Temperature Bank of Biological Objects was awarded a certificate from the Kharkiv Regional Council.
RESEARCH DIRECTIONS
The directions of activity of the LTBBO are related to the development of technologies for cryopreservation of biological material and its long-term storage at low temperatures of various levels:
- scientific research in the field of cryobiology, cryomedicine, biotechnology in order to improve the technology of low-temperature storage of biological material and to increase the efficiency of the bank’s operation activity;
- scientific and technical support of researches on cryopreservation and long-term storage, namely, low-temperature preservation of biological materials using modern effective protocols, freeze-drying and long-term storage of biological materials at various low temperatures;
- educational activities on the problem of cryopreservation and biobanking, advisory and expert work on the relevant topic;
- scientific and practical cooperation, including international;
- provision of paid biobanking services to third-party organizations;
- popularization of the activities of a scientific object that is a national heritage of Ukraine;
- covering the activities of a scientific object that constitutes the national heritage of the State in the scientific and public media.
