UNESCO CHAIR IN CRYOBIOLOGY

ACTIVITY AREAS

The scientific direction of the Chair is the development of modern and improvement of existing technologies for cryopreservation of biological objects of various levels of organization and their long-term storage at a low-temperature bank of biological objects, which is an integral part of the Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the NAS of Ukraine, in compliance with the requirements set by the European Association of Tissue Banks. Special attention is paid to the establishing of cryobanks of organs, tissues and cells of animals and humans, the gene pool of rare and endangered species of plants and animals, and the development of new medical and biological products.
One of the priorities of the Chair is the comprehensive exchange of scientific and technical information for the implementation of the acquired knowledge and experience in practical medicine to improve the population’s health and increase the quality of life.
The Chair constantly promotes the improvement of the professional level of its members, providing them internships in leading scientific and research centers in Europe and funding their participation in international scientific conferences, symposia, congresses, schools.

The Chair was founded in 1998. Now it is headed by Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, MD, Prof. Anatoliy M. Goltsev and coordinated by the  foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Prof.  Barry J.  FULLER (Great Britain). The activities of the Chair in Cryobiology are based on the UNESCO principles, supported by the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Committee for UNESCO Affairs in Ukraine.
