HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
In 1972, the Department of Organ and Tissue Transplantation was established as part of the newly established Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Medicine of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, which in 1979 was reorganized into the Department of Cryomedicine (since 1984 being the Department of Experimental Cryomedicine).
>>>Learn more about the history
For 40 years (from 1978 to 2018), the Department was headed by Prof. Borys P. Sandomyrskiy. In 2016, the Department merged with the Cryomorphology Laboratory, headed by Dr. Biol. Sci., Senior Researcher Mykola V. Repin. The Department has prepared over 30 dissertations for the degree of Candidate of Sciences (PhD) and 3 doctoral dissertations. For the series of scientific works “Cryothermosurgical methods and equipment for the treatment of oncology diseases of the abdominal organs” in 2018, the team of authors with the participation of Borys Sandomyrskiy was awarded the State Prize in the field of science and technology. Since 2018, the department has been headed by Dr. Mykola O. Chyzh, PhD (Medicine), Senior Researcher.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
The Department has accumulated in-depth experience in the application of low temperatures in experimental and clinical medicine. The employees have developed a new approach to the creation of devitalized xenogeneic tissue implants by the cryoradiation for reconstructive and restorative surgery. The effect of therapeutic hypothermia and the introduction of mesenchymal stromal cells on the course of experimental myocardial infarction are being studied. The therapeutic potential of cryopreserved tissue and organ extracts is being investigated in experimental models of osteoarthritis, cold wounds, ulcerogenesis, myocardial infarction, etc.
CURRENT RESEARCH
- Destructive and restorative processes in tissues in vivo after exposure to low temperatures and biologically active substances
- Determination of the peptide composition of blood serum in myocardial ischemia and necrosis as well as during cardiac remodeling
- Features of the course of destructive-inflammatory and reparative processes under the influence of low temperatures and cryoextracts of mammalian organs
