Department Focus Areas:
• Development of cryosurgical equipment and treatment methods
• In vivo experimental modeling of pathological conditions and their treatment protocols (urethral strictures, osteoarthritis, cold injuries, ulcerogenesis, myocardial infarction, peritonitis, chemotherapy, etc.)
• In vitro experimental modeling of pathological conditions
• Development of devitalized vascular grafts
• Investigation of the biological effects of tissue extracts and serums
• Exploration of potential applications for nanomaterials in cryobiology
History Of The Department
In 1972, the Department of Organ and Tissue Transplantation was established within the newly founded Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, led by Prof. Borys Dotsenko, MD, DSci.
• 1975–1978: Headed by Vasyl Mitasov, MD, PhD, Senior Researcher.
• 1978–2018: Headed by Prof. Borys Sandomyrskyi, MD, DSci.
• 1979: Reorganized into the Department of Cryomedicine (renamed the Department of Experimental Cryomedicine in 1984).
• 2016: The Cryomorphology Laboratory, headed by Mykola Riepin, BiolSciD, Senior Researcher, was integrated into the department.
• 2018–2025: Headed by Mykola Chyzh, MD, PhD, Senior Researcher.
• 2026–present: Headed by Volodymyr Prokopiuk, BiolSciD, MD, PhD, Senior Researcher.
The department has served as the academic foundation for over 30 PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) dissertations and 3 Doctoral (DSci) dissertations. In 2018, a team of authors including Borys Sandomyrskyi was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology for a series of scientific publications. Department researchers Mykola Chyzh, Henradii Kovaliov, and Volodymyr Prokopiuk serve as principal investigators and key personnel on National Research Foundation of Ukraine (NRFU) grants as well as state-funded and competitive research projects.
CURRENT RESEARCH
- Destructive and reparative processes in tissues in vivo following exposure to low temperatures and biologically active substances
- Analysis of the peptide composition of blood serum during myocardial ischemia, necrosis, and cardiac remodeling
- Characteristics of destructive‑inflammatory and reparative processes under the influence of low temperatures and cryoextracts of mammalian organs
